Broke City Fixes Sidewalks That Aren't

Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006 | I went downtown the other day and wondered if I was in the same broke city the mayor said I was in. Yes, my old car was almost rattled into oblivion by the cracked streets, but what surprised me was what I was seeing off the streets.

You see, the last time I was downtown was a few months ago, and at that time, I was shocked to see them replacing the brick sidewalks in the Gaslamp with...new brick sidewalks. Ripping up brick that seemed fine to me and putting down new brick.

Well, on my visit the other day, I could see where the new brick had been put down next to the old brick...nice job. Wish they'd come fix my cracked sidewalk in East San Diego. Guess we only have money to fix sidewalks downtown.

Anyhow, what really surprised me the other day was that they're now ripping up the new sidewalks and putting in new fancy streetlights, replacing the old fancy streetlights (we've had a streetlight out on our block for about 3 years, but I digress). Oh, and they can't put the streetlights in the same place. They're moving them over a couple of feet. Then they dig out the old base of the streetlight.

So let's see. A city that's broke replaces sidewalks that aren't, then digs up the new sidewalks to replace streetlights that aren't. Meanwhile, the streets next to the new and newer sidewalks and streetlights are falling apart.
