Grantville Goings-On

Heard from a few readers with feedback on the Grantville story that ran yesterday.
Here's an interesting tidbit I learned from a reader. We included a multimedia feature that showed an apparently abandoned building -- a former Alpine Glass building on Fairmount Avenue.
Turns out the building is owned by the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board and is being leased short-term, currently to the newly expanded Toyota dealership. I chatted with transit spokesman Luis Gonzalez this morning, who said the board also uses a portion of the property for a substation to supply electricity to the nearby Grantville trolley station.
Like the other stakeholders in the area, the transit board is waiting to see how the county's lawsuit against the city will be resolved. But the board has owned the property for a few years, working on plans to develop it even before Grantville was designated a redevelopment area.
Most of the plans presented so far for redevelopment show Fairmount Avenue shifting to run right through the property. Gonzalez said the transit board has been included in some of the plans to make Grantville a mixed-use neighborhood with better access to the trolley.
