Individual Solutions for a Global Problem

Published: Monday, February 12, 2007 9:35 PM PST

Thanks for inviting me back to the Café.

When I was working on ideas for my blog, a good friend sent me the following quote from a Hopi elder: "We are the people we have been waiting for!"

That quote got me thinking about all the problems we currently face and I decided to focus on one problem for this blog -- global warming -- because the solutions include simple, individual actions that a person can take immediately (no waiting).

So, you ask, what can one person do right now to help reduce global warming?

The answer is simple: Change one light bulb in your home to an energy star qualified bulb or fixture. This action is the equivalent of not driving your car for more than two weeks! Save energy and help protect our environment.

According to the ENERGY STAR website, you can save the most energy and money by replacing your highest used fixtures or the light bulbs in them with energy-efficient models. The five highest-use fixtures in a home are typically the kitchen ceiling light, the living room table and floor lamps, bathroom vanity, and outdoor porch or post lamp.

If every American home changed out just five high-use light fixtures or the bulbs in them with ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR, we could prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from more than 8 million cars.

ENERGY STAR qualified lighting provides bright, warm light but uses at least two-thirds less energy than standard lighting, generates 70 percent less heat, and lasts up to 10 times longer.

So what are you waiting for?

For more information on ENERGY STAR go to: http://www.energystar.gov

I agree, energy reduction is a key component in reducing global warming, but instead of just reducing our energy usage, why not do more? I wonder why we as a country are so afraid to find new sources of energy. I understand that many big businesses would probably close, but that is the market place. We neede to enact national legislation to provide research money into developing alternative energies. So what is our government waiting for?

Hey Donna, I'll make you a deal. I'll run out right now and buy new light bulbs, if you promise to blog about how the council plans on retaining police officers. Please tell me how the retention plan will stop the increased exodus of officers, who are looking to jump ship before our City Attorney begins another multi-million dollar fiasco to take away vested benefits from employees. Please tell me the council has a plan to address public safety issues before it is too late. Also, please tell me about DROP. Vested benefit or not?

Man-made climate change may be happening at a far slower rate than has been claimed, according to controversial new research. “We may see CO2 is responsible for much less warming than we thought and if this is the case the predictions of warming due to human activity will need to be adjusted.” Mr Svensmark last week published the first experimental evidence from five years’ research on the influence that cosmic rays have on cloud production. This week he will also publish a fuller account of his work in a book entitled The Chilling Stars: A New Theory of Climate Change.

How about a viable public transit system? I live in Mission Hills and work in University City. I would take the Trolley to and from work every day if the Trolley actually ran that far north.

Donna: As you know, a earthquake fault field has recently been discovered running from the Bay Bridge north to the Navy Broadway Complex site. Do you favor conducting an independent, peer reviewed earthquake fault investigation of downtown's bayfront before any new buildings are allowed to be built on the NBC or Lane Field sites?

JJ brought up a good idea, why doesn't the council come up with a fix for the police exodus becuase the mayor has none. This would definitely bring back a lot of credibility to the council members. If the mayor is relyng on the Chief's five year plan, San Diego is going to be in the hurt locker. No way this department will be able to hire 900 cops in three years. The best per year in the last six fiscal years was 132. Our attrition is going to be more than that.

I bought and installed those energy efficient lightbulbs a few years ago, and soon thereafter took them all back to the store and asked for my money. They only tell you in very fine print that they don't work with digital timers. As a first step in electricity conservation I had put in several digital timers. When I added compact flourescent bulbs on those circuits, the timers were ruined!

I agree with you, we should all do more. So Donna, why did our City take out Low Pressure Sodium street lights and put in High Pressure Sodium street lights? Ask your fellow Council Members that question. Not only did they (the Council) waste money and energy doing that, they increased the light pollution for the Palomar Observatory. Money buy the way, that was badly needed for other higher priorities.

It reminds me of those Hollywood Climate types who have a Prius in the garage for "show" -- and a Gulfstream III parked at the Burbank Airport for "go." The non-stop plane requested for Speaker Pelosi produces 10,000 pounds of CO2 per hour of flight, or 100,000 pounds per round trip. How many EnergyStar light bulbs would it take to equal 100,000 pounds of CO2 produced by one round trip? The mind boggles at the symbolism of exchanging one light bulb...

Donna, the earths climate has been evolving for billions of years without mans input. It is nice that SD is doing its part to slow global warming, but lets focus here. You were not elected to air condition the entire earth, you were elected to solve area problems. Police, fire, infrastructure, quality of life for SD residents. I like mass transit ideas and it does have the added benefits of reducing global warming. Changing the light bulbs for the 1.5 mil SD citizens wont have a huge impact on the habits of 6 billion worldwide. Focus Donna focus!

JJ and Brian- I have a soluton to all your problems with police pensions, how about you (police/FF) join social security, retire at age 67 like everyone else in America and get 25% of your last years salary. That would free up tons of cash for raises and at the same time keep cops on the street so we do not have two police departments like we do now-the one working and the one out fishing at age 50.

BBH: I didn't choose to opt out of SS, the city did back in 1984. So tell us what your compensation package was with MoFo as a biglaw attorney? As for retiring at 67, I guess you don't want cops to have any years of retirement since the average age cops die at is 67. You can't keep comparing private sector work with public sector, especially law enforcement. There is no comparison.
