LWV: Elect a Commission

Published: Thursday, May 10, 2007 4:31 PM PDT

The League of Women Voters issued a statement in response to my column today.

Responding to a statement by Mayor Jerry Sanders that he had "never heard of an elected charter commission," the San Diego League of Women Voters today reiterated its call for establishing an elected commission to review the city charter and recommend changes to the voters.

This whole charter change issue is confusing. The current effort is by the "mayor's" commission which reflects the mayor's desire to change the charter. The City Attorney is going to put for charter changes. The council has to approve these. None of these efforts represent the people, they are filled with special interests and represent agendas that are not neccessarily in the best interest of the taxpayer. What format are they going to put forth? If it is one big change, it will probably fail. The idea of a charter commission or a charter convention would be more in the interests of the taxpayer. Right now were are going to get a stronger mayor and a loss of separation of powers.

What we need to do is get rid of Mikel Haas and his new deputy, right out of the crooked election in Ohio, 2004...Michael Vu. I am totally disgusted that these two are in charge of making sure we voters have a clean election. What a joke!

Shame on the Mayor not knowing that a charter review committee could be elected. Kudos to the League of Women Voters for volunteering to get involved in this process. I'll put my money on the LWV any day for fairness and nonpartisan political organization.
