The Money Involved

Published: Tuesday, June 19, 2007 4:44 PM PDT

Donna Frye has a follow up to my post yesterday about her victorious effort to change us back to bimonthly water billing:

Just to let you know, the annual savings to the ratepayers will be at least $600,000 annually. That's money we can use for actual infrastructure instead of envelopes and postage.

In addition, the combined overcharges for the residential tiered-water users were at least $500,000 or more on an annual basis.

Attached is a document sent to my office in April 2007 from Jim Barrett that shows the overcharges for the residential water users for the period July1- Dec. 30, 2006. You will see during that six-month period that over 67 percent of the residential water customers were overcharged more than $300,000 (and needed to be "adjusted"). While it may seem like a small amount per individual, it's not a small amount when you look at the total.

Also passed by the city council today: by November of this year, these overcharge adjustments will be made to the bills every two months rather than every six months as is now the practice.

Just wanted to make sure you knew how much money was involved.

There you go.

Donna Frye is our city's savior. The last line in her follow up tells it all "Just wanted to make sure you knew how much money was involved" Unlike our Mayor she gives us the news with our PR posh or sensorship. I sure hope those that did not vote for her the first time around are kicking themselves. I am proud of service to the public and thank her for caring about the people and not money sucking developers. I bet if the mayor wanted to name a park after her she'd say no....please just take care of the homeless and unfortunate that can't care for themselves!

Thank you, Donna Frye, for your diligence and persistence with things like this. To my way of seeing things, $600K is a whole lot of money, especially when it's taxpayer dollars. I see on a previous posting on this site related to this topic, one or more of the commenters were characterizing you as being 'rude' or 'abrasive'. But, even if you were/are any of those things, I don't care. It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, and I'm glad you step up to take on that role. Excellent work!!!

Congratulations, Donna. The ratepayers of San Diego, especially the city dwellers, don't know how much they owe to you for correcting this obvious looting of our wallets under the guise of un-confusing the account holders. And where was Jim Madaffer while this was going on? He was in China, on a tour with his employer-to-be, the League of California Cities. Since he's termed out and apparently un-electable locally (too much baggage), he's headed north, where he hopes they won't catch on to his financial shenanigans or look into his checkered past. Apparently, they don't care about the truth nor does Jim, as long as there's a paycheck involved. At least we won't have to hear his self-serving rhetoric much longer; so there is a pony in there somewhere.
