A Good Night

Published: Friday, June 29, 2007 4:40 PM PDT

  • I was on Editor's Roundtable today on KPBS radio talking about, among other things, the school district's pretty ridiculous game of hide-the-budget this week. You can listen to it here. Don't miss the part where the LA Times' Tony Perry spills his water on the table leaving the U-T's Michael Smolens a bit distracted. Vladimir Kogan, voiceofsandiego.org's education writer will be on KPBS Television's Full Focus tonight to talk about his excellent work following the budget developments of the school district over the past few weeks.

  • In his latest TJI post, Rob was remiss not to include the awards our arts contributor Cathy Robbins won last night. Robbins writes mostly about classical music for us. A piece she did on the artwork of Edward Curtis, however, won her a first place award for criticism. She has a book coming out soon about American Indians.

I was pretty excited about our awards last night from the Society of Professional Journalists. We competed head to head with the local newspapers and we won 27 awards including Will Carless' best in show.

But I'm most stoked about the Best Blog award I got. Not because I came out ahead of other sites' blogs but because I beat this one. Ha!

There are definitely going to be more entries in this category next year though, so I better step it up.

Congrats to Cathy and all the winners from all the papers and stations last night. And a job well done to my fellow SPJ board members who put on the show.

  • Incidentally, journalist Lowell Bergman spoke at the banquet and was quite engaging. I almost came out of my skin when he said, repeatedly, that the future of news looked to be both online and nonprofit. Sound familiar?

Outstanding achievements, guys, and Cathy. Keep up that kind of pressure, and the 'competition' over at the U-T will feel the need to wear their Depends, suck down Valiums, and constantly look over their (right) shoulders. lol!!!

Scott: You and VOSD are too classy to point out that the U-T's editorial board received no recognition; from what I could tell from SPJ's web site, only U-T reporters on the ground were recognized. That's as it should be; in my experience, the reporters try hard to get the story right, yet in many cases the editors seem dead-set on getting it wrong. It's too bad that the U-T's editors still have a strangle-hold on our community. I hope that you and VOSD continue to weaken that unhealthy editorial grip.

Bravo ! Congratulations ! Cool ! Those just about say it all. Say what we readers already know. You are the best. The Voice is absolutely the best. I have to think of the "town crier" of yore. Or in the Revolutionary days "One if by land, two if by sea..." You are bringing us the truth, not just a puff-piece for the power cartels. We cannot express, all of us, what your outstanding journalism means to everyday people. It is never more clear than when developers stop at nothing to get their way, courting politicians to attempt to circumvent the EIR process and along with their consultants, do nothing to correct problems and hide truths. Again, we thank you !

There have been so many EXCELLENT articles in the VOSD since I first ran across you accidentially as I was researching Bajagua. All of you have done stellar work. Many of the issues would have been forgotten or overlooked by editors who have policies of non-news publishing. I do have a very small request. Is it possible for you to allow citizens to comment on all of the stories. Some of the best stories have no Feedback. There have been 5 stories in the last week. It is interesting to see how people really feel about an issue. One of the best recent articles is about ...While California..Toxic is reduced, San Diego Rises (approximately) What a shock to those of us in San Marcos to find #8 2doors from Palomar Station-which has unmitigatable CANCER and other health risks July10 6PM CityHall

Congratulations on your wins. We are lucky to have Will Carless back in San Diego. We agree with what the Journalism Awards judges wrote regarding "The Diversity Award. 1st Place: William Carless Voice of San Diego.org The Forbidden City Judges' Comment: This series is the clear winner. It may be about the best entry of all the categories in a very strong and competitive field. Mr. Carless has a nice writing style that combines a sense of history, compassion for his subject matter and a simply wonderful knack for detail that could almost be described as cinematic. Bravo." Now that the Union Tribune has added real time public comments to their website with a way to tell you about abuses, VOSD should do the same. It would also be great if we could post comments on all articles.
