City Branch Closed? Go to La Mesa

Published: Thursday, July 19, 2007 1:06 PM PDT

Thanks to reader KK for pointing me to this. It's a list of the hours that county libraries are open.

Some examples:

Library Hours

How San Diego's library system weekly hours of operation compare to the county's

Imperial Beach Branch: 50 hours

La Mesa: 58 hours (Open Sunday)

Lemon Grove: 50 hours

Poway: 58 hours (Open Sunday)

San Marcos: 58 hours (Open Sunday)

Valley Center: 44 hours

Remember, only four of the city's libraries are open more than 45 hours a week. In the county, I could only find a few that were open less than that. Most were open 58 hours a week, including Sundays.

The County has more money, so they can have more hours. People want everything, but don't want to pay. If you are open longer, you have to pay staff and overhead. By the way, the County's pensions are better than the city's.

Scott, how many times does the Mayor have to say(lie)that he's not cutting services? It doesn't matter what the reality of the situation is, he'll still cut and act as if he hasn't. I'd like to know how many new management positions have been hired after his promise of making cuts to those types of postions. Most of the current positions that have been cut are lower level positions that deal directly with the public! I wish someone in the media would at least question this total hypocrisy. By the way the county has pension problems too, how do they keep longer hours?

As long as Mayor Sanders wants to cut city jobs, the services to citizens are going to suffer. Cutting hundreds of filled jobs from the city payroll has resulted in fewer people to keep the city running. Something has to give. And many qualified, experienced people are leaving city employment because of pay freezes, cuts in benefits, and constant job stress about Aguirre's attacks on city pensions. It's a hostile work environment with few rewards and no thanks from the citizens. The reduced library hours are just one example of diminished services. Take a look at the violent crimes occurring right under our noses in all the communities. Now imagine what it will be like in 2009 with 200 more officers gone from the force. People will be afraid to leave their houses. Thanks, Mayor Sanders, for creating this deplorable situation.

Cheeky - the city's financial problems started long before Mayor Sanders took office a year and a half ago. Kudos to the mayor for maintaining the big picture in dealing with the city's problems and not caving to special interests.
