'Like a Ton of Bricks'

Published: Monday, July 23, 2007 5:19 PM PDT

I'm not done with the library by any means. There are still numerous ends to tie up. So we'll keep dropping updates as they come along. Thanks to all who wrote in and had an insight or two to share about the future of San Diego's library system and the central library.

I think we are (or at least I am) in a bit better position to ask the right questions the next time this issue comes up.

So, to start the week, here are a couple of things:

  • There's a good chance I'm going to have to stop blogging for a couple of days to finish up a project I've been working on for some time. Just FYI. I know some people like to come back looking for updates so I'll set a schedule soon and share it with you to save you the time.

  • Did anyone think this story in the U-T was a bit odd today? Apparently, one guy in Carlsbad wasn't convinced that former Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham was corrupt until just recently. The Pulitzer Prize winning reporting by the U-T, the indictment, the guilty plea and a severe prison sentence didn't do the trick. Not until the U-T got this excellent story outlining a series of interviews with the FBI Cunningham has done in prison, was the North County man convinced.

One who read the story was a Carlsbad man who worked under Cunningham in the Navy, a longtime admirer who had been clinging to the faint hope that the corruption was not truly deep-seated.

The sub-headline of the piece said the recent revelation of the prison interviews hit the Carlsbad man "like a ton of bricks." Not sure why this was a story. It read more like a piece from The Onion: "Man convinced house flooding when dog swims by face: Says sight of canine gasping for air 'hit me like a ton of bricks.'"

I can relate to the Carlsbad guy who had trouble believing Dukestir was a crook. I was never a fan of Duke, never agreed with his platform and would never in a million years have voted for him-BUT, he came across as about as straight of a shooter as you could be. So yes, when you have his straight arrow background, combined with a distrust of government-it is easy to see why people would give DukeStir the benefit of a doubt until the very end-I know I did. And to be honest, with Dukes background, he deserved that benefit of a doubt. I actually even feel some pity towards the guy.....

On a different Topic, Scott, your own Nina Perlman writes that Donna Frye said "I find it interesting that in trying to rein in one branch of government, in this case the judiciary, it’s done through the appropriations ordinance. It’s quite harsh as far as its ability to want to control." The judiciary? Is she really so clueless that she thinks the city attorney is the judicial branch? She probably is, given that she is Aguirre's ally, and he seems to think that too (in addition to his apparent belief that he is also the Executive and Legislative branches). How does she even get by day to day, I wonder.

BBH -- the Duke, as some of us have recently learned, was NEVER a straight shootin' kind of guy. He may have shot straight once in a while for cover, but even his good intentions were done to mask his bad intentions. So no pity and no cutting him slack -- in fact, coil up what remaining shreds of respect you have for that guy and offer it to someone else who could really use it...Let's see, who can take everyone's left over love for the Duke? Maybe Sanders could use a little respect -- NOT! OK, how about our top 3 favorite city council members Peters, Mad Daffer and Atkins -- NOT! So who can take our backlog of respect? How about ourselves! We'll use it to get a backbone and clean up city hall, making even more respect available for-ourselves.

Well BBH, I guess the Duke fooled you huh? I knew of him from people that knew him when he was still in the Navy. Most didn’t think he packed a full seabag and his combative attitude while in Congress simply told me he wasn’t a team player. By the way, good old Duncan Hunter is not too far behind the Duke! Mr. Hall, if, and I do mean if, Sanders decides to run for re-election he or whoever becomes the next mayor will be looking at a developing train wreck, San Diego is only a year or so away from some very serious choices, and I don’t see anyone on the horizon who has the brains or fortitude to make it right.
