Science Program Launched

UCSD expanded a hands-on science program that links university scientists to underserved high schools today at Lincoln High School. The program, Biobridge, has already taught nearly 100 high school teachers in Sweetwater, San Diego, Poway and Grossmont Unified school districts to use cutting-edge techniques in school labs, and brought new programs to 10 San Diego Unified classrooms. Biobridge originated in the laboratory of UCSD pharmacologist Dr. Roger Tsien, and is supported by both federal and private funding.
Not-so-fun fact from the San Diego Unified School District press release: It takes an average of 10 years for a notable scientific discovery to land on the pages of a middle or high school textbook.
School officials welcomed media onto the Lincoln High campus, where students were isolating jellyfish and coral DNA alongside UCSD geneticists.
