Chargers and SDSU Monitor Wildfire Conditions

Published: Monday, October 22, 2007 8:15 PM PDT

The NFL, Chargers, the Mountain West Conference and San Diego State are tracking conditions in San Diego caused by wild fires, but it is too early to determine if games later in the week will be effected.

The Chargers are scheduled to face the Houston Texans Sunday afternoon at Qualcomm Stadium, which is serving as an evacuation site. San Diego State is scheduled to play BYU Saturday night at Qualcomm.

Due to poor air quality, the Chargers have flown to Phoenix to prepare for the Houston game at the Arizona Cardinals’ practice facility. There have been 40 members of the Chargers’ organization, including players, that have been forced to evacuate their homes.

The University of San Diego football team plays Saturday at Dayton University in Ohio. In addition to the SDSU football game, other Aztecs athletic events scheduled in San Diego this weekend are Aztecs women’s soccer Thursday against New Mexico, the MWC men’s and women’s cross country championships Saturday at Mission Bay Park and Aztecs women’s volleyball Saturday against Colorado State at Peterson Gym.

Among prominent San Diego athletes that have been forced to evacuate their homes were Chargers running back LaDainain Tomlinson, Padres reliever Trevor Hoffman and Padres baseball Hall-of-Famer and San Diego State coach Tony Gwynn.

The Chargers should play at the Rose Bowl or the Memorial Coliseum… Aztecs could play at Patrick Henry High School and still probably not sell out…
