Just a 'Drafting Error'

Published: Thursday, November 1, 2007 3:35 PM PDT

Well, the mayor's spokesman, Fred Sainz, called back. He said he was right and that the sentence in the fresh new Comprehensive Annual Financial Report that discloses that the mayor declared a Stage 1 water watch was just "a drafting error."

"The department director has never recommended that the mayor declare a Stage 1 water alert and the mayor never declared a Stage 1 alert," Sainz said.

So what does this mean for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report? After all, "errors" in past ones have crippled the city for years and brought on the wrath of regulators.

Sainz pointed out that the misstatement occurs in the transmittal letter signed by Mayor Jerry Sanders, Chief Operating Officer Jay Goldstone and Comptroller Greg Levin. The transmittal letter, he said, is not audited and can be easily changed.

That's a pretty stark fact to just accidentally make up and then insert in such an important document.

Scott: You do a great job. I do get frustrated by the fact the Saniz is the defacto mayor. Why can politicans and the city employees speak for themselves. I do not know of anyone who voted for this PR guy. Just like LaJolla slide, Saniz is speaking for and directing who can and can not speak for the city. It really is becoming a sorry situation and in my opinion will cost the mayor his job. thanks, Rick

No one ever reads those budgets. They just approve them.

You say That's a pretty stark fact to just accidentally make up and then insert in such an important document. Scott, are you expressing the opinion that the mayor or his staff is lying about it? Then just say it. It's unsupportable, and offensive, but if you think it, just say it. To many on this site believe everyone associated with either government or any money making entity (big business, small business, corporations, you name it) corrupt liars just looking to screw everyone else. What a miserable unhappy existence this lot must have. Get lives, my friends.

Good to see we're talking about the mayor. But doesn't the mayor have a mouth and a brain? Golly gee I know he is busy since the catastrophic fires and all but we're talking about our water supply here. Duh...water is key to our survival! As for Sainz, he must be another reason why Sanders supported the gay marriage thing. The media should demand to speak to the mayor and only the mayor!

At a Planning commission hearing on the General Plan, the Director of the Water Dept said that in the future, water usage per capita will be reduced. he did not elaborate, nor did the commissioners ask him about this. I see an example of reduced per capita usage in today's paper. In Orme, Tennessee, the water is on only 3 hours per day. No mention of reduced per capita usage in the City General Plan.

'Sounds like the mayor doesn't read what he signs. I thought they got rid of the city manager form of government.

Norman, when the media is speaking with Sainz they really are speaking with the mayor. The other guy is just a figurehead facade. By my count, this is at least the third time the "mayor" signed something that he didn't know was in a policy document. I think they keep the big guy in some office, with headphones on, listening to "Dark Side of the Moon." Fred takes the headphones off when the camera angles are "right" for the 5:00 or 10:00 o'clock news, or some other photo opp.
