Maienschein for City AttorneyPublished: Thursday, January 17, 2008 7:09 AM PST City Councilman Brian Maienschein will run for city attorney, according to a conservative blog. Local politico Barry Jantz, who blogs for conservative sites FlashReport and Red County San Diego, said Maienschein had confirmed that he would challenge City Attorney Mike Aguirre. From the blog: "I have been encouraged for awhile to run and I will be doing so," Maienschein said, "The important thing is to beat Mike Aguirre. I think I have a good chance." Maienschein would be the second prominent Republican in the race, joining Judge Jan Goldsmith. On the Democratic side, Aguirre's being challenged by Dan Coffey, and former San Diego schools Superintendent Alan Bersin has said he's contemplating a run. Council President Scott Peters' name also continues to be mentioned. Maienschein's sky-high political aspirations appeared moribund as City Hall's financial scandals unfolded, but the councilman's comments indicate that he believes the city's problems won't have an enduring impact on him politically. -- ANDREW DONOHUE
