Making Ends Meet

Wages lag behind living costs and the disparity is growing, says a report released this morning called "Making Ends Meet." It's a look at the cost of living for workers in San Diego compiled by the Center on Policy Initiatives, a local left-leaning think tank focused on worker issues.

The report uses data from the California Budget Project; we looked at the San Diego figures when that report was released in October.

In the report, CPI pulls this bit from a Sandag study:

Since 1990, the local economy has created eight times more low-paying jobs (median wage $24,547) than high-paying jobs (median $79,764).

The think tank concludes the report by calling on lawmakers and policymakers to create higher-paying jobs and encourage employers to pay wages that would allow their workers to, at least, make ends meet.
