Quantifying the U-T's Cuts

While reporting on the cuts at The San Diego Union-Tribune earlier this year, its officials refused to say what effect the combination of layoffs and buyouts had on its newsroom staff: the reporters, editors, designers and photographers who put out the daily product.
Lorie Hearn, the newspaper's watchdog editor, estimated the newsroom cuts at 25 percent in a column published in this spring's Nieman Reports.
She wrote:
Our newsroom is now 25 percent smaller than it was in those heady days of 2005; the newsroom staff now numbers just shy of 300.
And, if you missed it, three managers just left the U-T's Internet operations team.
