A Charter School Rebuttal

Published: Friday, May 16, 2008 4:24 PM PDT

MaeLin Levine, one of the parents behind Urban Discovery Academy, a newly approved charter school, sent me a rebuttal to San Diego Unified's criticisms of the proposed school's charter. A charter is a document that sets forth how a charter school will operate, and must be approved by a school district or other authorizer.

District staffers recommended that San Diego Unified's board reject the charter, arguing that the school would face financial problems and was an illegal conversion of a private school into a charter school. Levine is one of several Urban Discovery Academy backers who previously attended Harborside, a private school that closed last summer. The program was subsequently incorporated into a public school, Washington Elementary.

Despite the opposition of staff, the San Diego Unified board voted to approve the charter earlier this week.

Here is Urban Discovery's response to the district's concerns.
