New Comments System

Published: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 4:17 AM PDT

OK, as many of you have noticed, we have reformatted the reader comments system a bit.

Underneath our commentary posts and letters, etc., you can now reply not only to the story, but also to specific comments so that back and forth discussions between two readers are a bit easier to distinguish.

Secondly, and more importantly, there's now an Editor's Choice section for comments of value. Reader comments that are respectful, intelligent and that genuinely add to the discussion will be promoted to the Editor's Choice section regardless of their point of view on the issue. It's a way for us to encourage the kind of constructive dialogue that the commenting system can enable if it's not dominated by some of the more vitriolic posters.

Also, there's a different style and font. A few concerns have already been raised about the font size. Others have just loved the new look. Redesigns, I've noticed before, are generally met with immediate resistance and then embraced over time. Please give it a few days and if you still don't like any particular attribute of it, let us know.

But the goal is simple: We're going to continue to try to raise the quality of our online discussions.

I like it - the naysayers can pound sand

Scott, I am trying to come up with something thoughtful to say about your comment dialogue box change so I can see the editors circle in action. That being said, the new comment boxes are nice. I don't have a reason to use any special formating but I am now wondering if that has been fixed as well. The other thing is that the Verification code (which was changed a while back) is much improved as well. So congratulations on your continuous improvement of the website.

The "Editor's Choice" concept is ingenious! :) Congrats on continuing innovation!

The "Editor's Choice" blue background makes it MUCH easier to read. PUT ALL the comments into that type of background and enlarge the font.

I like it too. My eyssight ain't what it used to be so the font is difficult to read. But as I mentioned in another thread, you can adjust the font size on the fly in the comments on this webpage. You can your mouse by holding down the left CTRL key and rolling the wheel. Or, you can hold down the CTRL key and press the +(plus) or - (minus) keys on the the numeric keypad on your keyborard. I found this very helpful for reading online when smaller fonts are used.

Just tell me, please, if -- when we put our email above the comment we wish to submit -- whether this will prohibit the constant switching of names that has been so obviously prevalent for the past several months. Would that it be so! Yes, it is only human nature that "over time" most things new will be embraced. People get used to the change and tired of complaining about it -- BUT having some larger print would be oh-so nice. It is a pain -- a small one to be sure, but nevertheless an inconvenience -- to go through the rigamarole one writer helpfully suggested with the ctl button and the mouse wheel. Have pity on the over-40 crowd. Will Frank G's comment make the "Editor's Choice" section? I expect that each and everyone of mine will. Pounding sand, yours truly, Edgar.

Scott, it may be time to require some light form of registration...other how do I know that the above post is really from the controversial Escobar-Eck rather than some geek using her name. Sincerely, Pamela Anderson, (the most recognisable icon of the new millenium) .

Please make the posters name BOLD, increase the font size (I know you heard that one already) and last-lets register the handles so no one does any commando posting under user handles.

Amen! Amen! Please do as BBH requests, Voice. They are but three teensy requests, but they will really improve the usability of your comments section.
