Fire Chief: Thanks But No Thanks, Chula Vista

Published: Friday, October 10, 2008 11:50 AM PDT

The Chula Vista public affairs team just put out a bit of news that may seem surprising, unless you've been following the news lately:

Tucson's Stephen Jeff Piechura, who accepted the position of Chula Vista Fire Chief Wednesday, has formally declined the offer. Piechura, Fire Chief of the Northwest Fire/Rescue District in Southern Arizona, announced his decision in an email to the Chula Vista City Manager.s office late Thursday afternoon.

This is quite a development. Piechura's hiring was a pretty big deal for the city.

But after thinking about the job, Piechura had second thoughts:

"It is with great regret that I respectfully decline the offer to become the next Fire Chief for the City of Chula Vista. After further consideration, it has been determined that my taking the position in these times would not be of benefit for my family. Thank you for your consideration and your confidence in my abilities.

Anyone taking a management position at the city of Chula Vista right now is basically like a customer ordering a big crap sandwich from a rundown little diner. Not sure if it was realizing this that influenced his decision.

Cox and friends have really destroyed this city. Russ Hall and Scott Vinson must be stopped. There's no telling how much damage that trifecta can do to CV.

Scott: Your last paragraph raises the question, "Who edits the editor?" Those two sentences add little to the article and detract from both the target and the writer. Perhaps a change in the acroynm SLOP might be worthy of consideration. The odious title does not reflect well on the subject of your objections, or on the author's frame of mind. It was fun for awhile but it did not age well. I value the VOSD and your contributions, but I also have high expectations and high hopes. Even when critical, a wordsmith can make the point selectively and even politely. So as the book reviewers say, "We look forward to his [your] next work with interest."

What? Taking a position with a financially struggling city in a county with a broken wild fire plan is a bad idea? It would be nice to get some new blood in that can see the county fire strategy can never work, and it is time for a new game plan. It will take a very strong personality to fight the firefighter unions. (The firefighter unions are by far the strongest unions in San Diego)

Your comment makes sense until the last sentence. Jeff Bowman was from "out of county" and the unions weren't his problem..... it was a weak and gutless city council and taxpayers that don't hold their elected officials accountable. When is the last time you had dialogue with your elected representatives? This anti-union dribble is absurd. If the firefighter unions were so strong here you would see pay scales commensurate with what firefighters are payed north of this county line. Proud to be a member of the IAFF, Frank O'Grady

You forgot to mention that Mayor Cheryl Cox is the turd sandwich chef! Something is rotten in the city of Chula Vista and SLOP is on to it.

was the "crap sandwich" comment necessary? i found it offensive and i don't even live in chula vista. also, what in the fire chief's comments leads us to believe anything other than his family considerations led him to ultimately decline the job?

Sort of hard to call me on the welfare queen comments while "crap sandwich" is just as bad if not worse. As for the new Fire Chief, he had no business accepting the job- you either want it or you dont-backing out 24 hours later is not the time to decline.
