Roberts to Thalheimer: Shame!

Published: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 10:15 AM PDT

I have a lot to write about today, hopefully I can get to even a fraction of it.

First off, I heard from Phil Thalheimer's campaign consultant, Jennifer Jacobs. Thalheimer himself hasn't had a chance to call, but Jacobs passed along that, despite my totally unsubstantiated speculation, Thalheimer is, in fact, opposed to Proposition A, the parcel tax that would pay for increased fire protection and perhaps a regional fire department in San Diego.

Remember, this is the measure that County Supervisor Ron Roberts said San Diegans should be ashamed of themselves if they don't approve.

So, Roberts' fellow Republicans Thalheimer and April Boling and Democrats Marti Emerald and Thalheimer opponent Sherri Lightner -- you all should be ashamed of yourselves if this measure doesn't pass.

Shame. Shame. Shame! A plague on your houses!

On another note, last week the crack team here at Scott Lewis on Politics also asked the candidates where they stood on the beach booze ban.

Thalheimer supports it, which puts him in agreement with Lightner and at odds with District 3 candidate Todd Gloria, Emerald and Boling. Again, District 3's Stephen Whitburn has said he's neutral.

I'd still like to get Thalheimer on the horn, but that's where we are for now.

Schoci: these mailers are more a sign of the times than a reflection on the characters of the politicians involved. They reflect the "win at all cost" or don't get paid postures and contracts of the political consultants and more generally the lack of civility within this current American political milieu. But take hope, for they are nothing compared to the nasty tactics that have been used historically in our elections and in fact demonstrate some humor. In Ms Lightner's last advocacy piece she's juxtaposed with the ugliest horse in Christendom saying that her attached platform comes from the Horse's Mouth. In her latest on Thalheimer she shows him greeting Duke Cunningham, our biggest Horse's Ass.Everyone knows that Ms Lightner is smarter than a horse and you should know that the photo taken with the Congressman was posed years before anyone knew of his crimes. Take heart, thankfully,it's soon over.Let's VOTE.

Ron Roberts is the one who should be ashamed of himself for proposing such a boneheaded, half-baked, regressive and inequitable structure for this tax. I'm not opposed to paying a fair tax for needed additional fire protection, but Roberts could have at least tied it to assessed value, like every other property tax. As it stands, Prop A would have middle-class homeowners and those struggling to pay the mortgage each month subsidizing the wealthy owners of Rancho Santa Fe in their 8,000 square foot backcountry megamansions, built where they never should have been built in the first place. Shame on Ron Roberts, and Hooray for all the council candidates, and Donna Frye, who have taken a position against Prop A. Ron, go back and try again next year, and this time come up with a real plan!

Scott, The reason Sherri Lightner and Marti Emerald oppose Prop A is because the tax is not PROGRESSIVE. At a flat $52 per parcel, you will pay the same freight as Dean Spanos. Does that seem fair? If so, you probably support repeal of the Estate Tax so Bill Gates can die free and clear. Boling and Thalheimer oppose it simply because it represents ANY tax. Thus exposing them for the right-wing idealogues they are. If they actually analyzed the issue, they would realize what a true bargain Prop A is for their well-heeled supporters (Roberts obviously does) and support it. Rewrite Prop A and base the fee on relative property values, like the base property tax, and see how fast Sherri Lightner and Marti Emerald support it and how vocally Roberts, Thalheimer and Boling all oppose it ! !

Mr Thalheimer should be more ashamed of his mailers. I know politics is not the most polite endeavor, but how can Mr Thalheimer blatantly and knowingly misquote his opponent, Sherri Lightner, and attribute positions to her that he knows are false. At long last, Mr Thalheimer, have you no shame - no shame at all! Shoci

Regarding the Beach Booze Ban, isn't it interesting that of the three candidates who oppose it, not one of them has even an ounce of sand in their districts. Lightner and Thalheimer have lots and lots of beach in their district. Don't you think that they have a much better idea of what works for these communities than the inlanders? As for Whitburn, "none of the above" is not an option for the voters. So, why should it be one for him?? VOTE YES ON PROP D ! ! !

City Council candidates Todd Gloria, April Boiling and Marti Emerald (I am so disappointed to find her in this company!) lack sand in their districts, but their would-be constituents get just as hot on summer days as folks living closer to the ocean. The beach is not about drinking alcohol: it's about enjoying the water, sun and sand and the sound of surf. It's about being able to set up a blanket and a picnic for family and friends and having a beautiful day-into-evening without worrying about lewd and rowdy drunks who establish their beach head with towers of six-packs , kegs and hard-liquor luges. It's about a cleaner beach all the time, not just after major holidays. It's about not having to worry about your kids getting hassled by inebriated jokers who don't understand boundaries. Vote YES ON D.

Its really funny watching Whitburn continue to waffle. Maybe thats because his paymasters haven't decided how they feel about Prop D. For the truth, check out: link
