Aguirre 3.0

Published: Thursday, November 6, 2008 10:03 AM PST

In case you missed it, here's a link to my analysis of the rise and fall of Mike Aguirre, the man who made the City Attorney's Office something all San Diegans actually had heard about.

A lot of people have asked me what I think he'll do when he leaves office. Many are joking that he will go down to Chula Vista and run there now that the South Bay city has decided to have an elected city attorney.

I keep responding the same way. I think he'll go away for a while, grow a huge beard, lose 10 pounds and then he'll show up again. He was a force in the city when he was just a lawyer and he'll get out those big poster boards again and start writing tough letters like the old days.

He still has a lot of friends and he's got a good former title to add a bit of credibility to his future stances. Write him off at your own risk.

Say what you will, "we" have short memories, especially those that pay little attention to politics. Michael Aguirre will be back and those true, die-hard followers like BBH will continue to bloviate what a wonderful guy Aguirre was and how he can again become San Diego's Savior once again. With a little luck, we just may have about three years of sanity until then!

I hope you're right. This crooked little town needs more active watchdogs like Mike.

Aguirre did have his problems but why are we not offended by all the politicians who have robbed San Diego blind? Oh, they were nice about it, so pleasant as they removed your wallet. When will people tear themselves away from their restaurant dinners, their cable TV, their consumer babbles and require politicians to serve them? How much worse do things have to get?

Interesting that according to an article by Will Carless Goldsmith believes he as city attorney has authority to bring or drop certain lawsuits without consulting the council. He may be right, but that is exactly what he criticized Aguirre for. My very cynical guess is that he will be conferring with the city council over which suits to bring or drop a whole lot less over that next two years than he would have if Boling and Thalheimer had won.

San Diego voted Mike Aguirre out of office because they accept what is. The voters are use to the "good old boy" network running the City for themselves not the taxpayers. The voters want higher taxes, the best paid City employees in the Nation and Municipal corruption. They do not want honest and responsive officials. This is why Mike was voted out of office.

Elmer, why is it San Diegans were informed and honest when they voted Aguirre into office, but then stupid and support corruption when the same electorate voted him out after one term in office? Could it be that perhaps Aguirre is not quite everything you think he is? Perhaps loosing 124 out of 135 attorneys in 4 years was deemed unacceptable. Perhaps being rebuked time and again by judges for sub-standard legal work, ethical violations, and failure to comply with public disclosure laws had something to do with it. I don't deny Aguirre was independent, but that quality alone does not an effective City Attorney make. He simply was not the right person for this job. But I will say that I'll be happy to have him as a private-citizen whistle-blower gadfly...assuming he keeps his bar card, or course.

Rather than grow a beard, I hope Mike goes to D.C. and Wall Street. He and his brother are sorely needed on the national stage, exposing what led us into this state of the union. Their experience, tenacity, and boldness could be directed toward our serious situation in securities and lending frauds. I thank Mike for his service to San Diego. It'll never be forgotten. Our loss can be the country's gain. He's now free to do more than ever. Mike Aguirre is perfect for the job.

Fred. It is quite interesting, your comments that is on Mke Aguirre. It is funny that those that have worked around him, for him, and against him have the complete opposite opinion as you. He is a lousy lawyer and a horrible boss. Some team may benifit from his knowledge if he is locked in a room and doesn't have to deal with people.
