Election Winners and Losers II: Faulconer

Published: Thursday, November 6, 2008 1:04 PM PST

Our next Winner in this year's election is City Councilman Kevin Faulconer. Yes, he was one Republican that had a couple of reasons to smile Tuesday.

In the final month of the campaign season, the San Diego Association of Realtors, the Lincoln Club and a group of hoteliers dumped tens of thousands of dollars into the campaign to support Proposition C, the measure that would ensure that lease revenue from around Mission Bay is protected for maintenance and projects at Mission Bay and other city parks.

The measure was sponsored by Faulconer and City Councilwoman Donna Frye. It's fair to say that if you have a citywide measure and it can get support from Frye, Faulconer and a bunch of Realtors and hoteliers, you can expect an easy passage, and Proposition C was no exception.

It's an issue Faulconer's been working on since before he was a City Councilman. He had to take on the U-T editorial board on the matter.

Behind it all is a simple fact that the hoteliers long ago recognized: The city is in financial trouble. Carve out your piece of the pie if you can and hold on for the ride -- hence, of course, the hoteliers successful advocacy of their own Tourism Marketing District last year.

But Faulconer got to protect a big jewel in his district. At the same time, he watched Proposition D, the ban on booze, pass. This was a triumph for Faulconer. He had waffled on the booze ban years ago. But watching that melee Labor Day 2007 on Pacific Beach pushed him into the camp wanting to ban booze. He got a temporary one-year ban through and then he and his colleagues decided -- and looking back, it was brilliant -- to confirm the decision by having it put on the ballot. In this instance, Faulconer set himself up to win both ways: If the booze ban was repealed by voters, he would have gotten credit for letting people decide. But since it passed, he looks like he was on top of the public opinion from the beginning and they validated a tough call.

He had to take on the politically powerful grocers and liquor groups. And he'll have some very grateful neighbors. There will be some residual anger from those who will long miss the chance to have a beer and throw horse shoes on the beach. It's a shame that has been lost. But the people passionate about that simply don't vote as often as the homeowners and residents in the beach community that pushed it through.

Faulconer gets a lot of love from them for the move.

He's a Republican and he was a winner Tuesday. They are not easy to find.

I hate to sound like I'm parroting the U-T, but there's only so much money to go around. When your neighborhood library closes down, and the city instead spends that money to restore the silly eel grass in Mission Bay, I hope you think of Councilmembers Faulconer and Frye.

Our Councilman Kevin Faulconer also spoke at Donna Frye and Carl DeMaio's public meeting for their City Council reforms last week. That makes at least 3 Council persons voting for reforms to engage the public and who want the incoming City Council to choose their President. Mission Bay Park east of Ingraham Street (including Sea World, Fiesta Island, De Anza Cove, and the San Diego River) is located in Donna Frye's District 6. link Donna was also a big winner on election night.

Thank God that the reform agenda has gone in the toilet since the November 4th neutering. Finally the county has gone 'blue' never to be 'red' again. Good riddens!!!

Henry, Though the core values of republicans and democrats differ greatly and on the 4th of November the democrats had a great day, lets look at who really won: 1. Booze ban is now law for good. Hmm. 2. Prop 8 passed. Not only in this state, but similar laws in two other states. Hmm #2 3. Goldsmith 59.1+%--Aguirre 40%. Hmm #3 Actually #2 is the most important of the 3 for the country but the first 2 are conservative values. Now if I am not mistaken Henry, your support was on the losing end of all three of these! Seems to me conservative values were a winner here in San Diego, and the first 2 topics support this. No response necessary-whining prohibited!

Prop C is bad for the City. The commercial development wasn't put in in Mission Bay to pay for the bay. The commercial development is part of the bay. What is a recreation area without hotels and tourism? If you look back at the original publicitions regarding creating the park, it was a tourist destinationl Tourists wouldn't visit a mudflat. Now more libraries will need to close but we'll have nice eel grass in the bay.

Donna Frye...loser or winner? Her voice within the council will be amplified by the chorus of new members. She'll no longer be singing solo, but leading the choir, already dueting with DeMaio and Faulconor, and soon to be joined on stage by "LEGs" --- Lightner, Emerald, and Gloria. San Diego will be dancing to a new beat. Donna will be choosing the songs. Sanders can bang on a hollow drum, or play along. Delay, deny, and deceive is dead as disco. Ready to rock-and-roll with Donna, San Diego?

Man Fred, you sure dumped Whitburn like a bad habit. Now you're tooting Donna's horn. I have heard that Councilman Hueso will be the next council president NOT Councilwoman Frye.

I admire and respect Stephen Whitburn, and worked hard to elect him. But the election is now over. Todd Gloria has won a seat on the council. He deserves and will have my support. Time to look forward and finally begin changing the culture of corruption in San Diego. Donna Frye will be a big part of that change. I'm confident Todd Gloria will join her in doing the right thing. I hope you will join us in our important fight to Change San Diego.

The voice should give Ms. Frye a headliner also. Ms. Frye was fighting for Mission Bay when Mr. Faulconer was still in diapers. I certainly hope her name will have BIG letters when she wins council president.

Prop D was a bad idea and Faulconer will see that soon. Businesses will fail and the tourist dollars will drop. Way to go! I'm going to have the last laugh trust me. This isn't over just yet. Remember the fat lady hasn't sang her tune. She is just warming up.

Such a ridiculous over dramatization. That's the same thing we heard from people when they made it illegal to smoke in bars. "No one will come anymore." and "All the bars will go out of business." Bars seem to be doing fine. Heck, I know smokers who now can't believe that they actually used to be able to smoke inside. This too shall pass. the beaches, and all of the businesses around them, will be just fine. They may have some different people coming in. But businesses will not suffer because people can't drink on the beach. if drinking is the only reason you go to the beach, then you have bigger issues than being allowed to do so.
