How About a Charterbrary?

The San Diego Unified school board will discuss the idea of putting a charter school in the library during a closed-session discussion Tuesday, a district spokesman said.

You may recall that when the idea of placing a school in a planned downtown library (an idea we've taken to calling a schoobrary) surfaced late last year, concerns arose about the increased construction costs that would result since schools are subject to stricter building standards.

School officials balked at paying for a study to determine the costs and instead said they wanted to look at the idea of seeking an exemption to the school construction laws before determining that was unlikely.

But charter schools don't have to follow those construction rules, known as the Field Act.

School district spokesman Bernie Rhinerson said he couldn't discuss details of the talks with the city.

He said it's being discussed behind closed doors because it involves real estate negotiations.
