7-6-Overlay
Published: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 11:14 AM PDT
Starting Oct. 24, all telephone calls made in North County's 760 area code zone will have to include the area code as well as the seven-digit number, the North County Times reported today.
That's because the 760 region has a new 442 area code overlay, meaning that new numbers generated in the region will begin with that prefix rather than the familiar 760.
There arose quite a dustup over the California Public Utilities Commission's previous plan to split the 760 region in two. The PUC changed to the overlay plan in October.
Today's North County Times has an explainer on the transition.
No word how the 760 Connection, the hip hop collaborative in North County I wrote about a couple of years ago in my story on the issues facing the 760 region, will weather the change.
