An Artistic Graveyard? Yeah, No

By Bill Bradshaw, Mission Beach

Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 | More than just a graveyard, indeed. It's an asset that could be converted into cash, instead of an annual $300k drain on the city treasury by simply selling it. But what does the bureaucracy do? Spends time on plans to spend more money to make it a "showplace" for nature and art.

With a $169 million deficit, called "structural" by the IBA, can there be a more fitting example of why this city, one of very few that runs cemeteries,is in deep trouble? Until someone cleans house, there is no way our financial problem will be faced, much less solved.

Maybe a few bucks could be made by selling bricks in the walls of various graveyards that would allow those who have someone dear to them a spot where they could be commemorated, even if they are not buried here, or have a marked grave. An example of this would be for SD air pioneer Charles F. Walsh, who died in a 1912 crash in Trenton, and who was once buried in what's now Pioneer Park. His grave is lost, unmarked and forgotten--totally unforgivable for an early pioneer of flight, especially since he was from San Diego. He deserves as much and perhaps many others do too.

So they sell it and they spend it. What then? Sell something else and spend it till it's gone. Yeah, those assets are sure a pain in the rear and need to go!!! Seriously, do you think services will increase and taxes will decrease if we sell off assets? No, the assets will just be gone
