The City Council on Monday will consider prohibiting alcohol at city beaches after Councilman Kevin Faulconer began pushing for a ban since police arrested 16 individuals for their part in a Labor Day skirmish in Pacific Beach.
The council will consider different versions of the proposal. One version, the one favored by Faulconer, bars beachgoers from drinking on any city beach or coastal park throughout the entire year. Another, which Mayor Jerry Sanders supports, would impose the ban only during major holidays. Other versions would exempt some beaches and parks along the coast.
There's speculation that liquor distributors and retailers would try to overturn an ordinance against beach drinking in a future election if the council passes the ordinance, but they have yet to wage a public campaign saying so.
The meeting will take place at 2 p.m. in the City Council chambers, located at 202 C St. in downtown San Diego.
