In the wake of a reported sex offender being found volunteering with students at a San Diego school, the school board is weighing a policy that would require all volunteers to undergo background checks.

School volunteers are not required to be screened for criminal convictions under California law or current San Diego Unified policy. Principals are given the freedom to decide whether or not fingerprinting or a background check is needed.

The new rule will go up for a vote on Tuesday night.
