The city of San Diego could be getting out of the landfill business, Mayor Jerry Sanders said in a press release today. But beyond that his office isn’t talking.

Sanders’ announcement formalizes one of the most open secrets in city politics — that the city is considering selling the Miramar landfill, which it has operated since 1959. Word first leaked about the landfill proposal in May. The landfill sale arose again as part of a last week’s trial balloon fiscal reform package that included a sales tax increase.

Mayoral spokesman Alex Roth declined to comment on why the mayor didn’t have a press conference to announce the landfill proposal, why the Mayor’s Office hasn’t commented publicly on the sales tax issue and when the mayor would comment on all these issues.

“Obviously at some point down the line things will develop,” Roth said. “But for right now we’re not commenting beyond the press release.”

The release does mention that City Council would have to approve the landfill deal and that any contract or sale would require labor negotiations.
