Neighborhood Tug-of-War on TV

I joined our partners at NBC7 San Diego to talk about how a
vacant lot on El Cajon Boulevard exposed the culture clash between
City Heights, Kensington and Talmadge.

I joined our partners over at NBC7 San Diego this week to talk about plans for a new YMCA on El Cajon Boulevard. The club is slated to be built on a vacant lot at an intersection where City Heights meets Kensington and Talmadge.

Both sides want to shape development along the boulevard, but the two sides are very different. City Heights, to the south, has a larger immigrant and poor population. Advocates and business owners there had suggested affordable housing or a multicultural marketplace. Kensington and Talmadge to the north are whiter and more affluent. They wanted a Trader Joe’s or Henry’s. The property owner, Price Charities, decided on a YMCA, hoping it would bring together residents of both sides of El Cajon Boulevard.
