Students and Patients Benefit the Most From San Diego’s Biggest Nonprofits

Health care facilities and private universities dominate San Diego’s list of largest nonprofit employers.

San Diego nonprofits employ less than 10 percent of the regional workforce.

But the biggest ones serve some of the most important functions in our lives. Health care and education nonprofits – which include hospitals and colleges – employed two-thirds of local nonprofit employees as of 2013, according to University of San Diego’s Caster Family Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Research.

They include National University and Sharp Healthcare, which runs more than a half-dozen hospitals. Sharp alone employs more people than the city of San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric combined, according to jobs numbers in the city’s latest financial report.

These nonprofits have massive budgets and often expansive real estate holdings but they’re not delivering the same tax payoff as many of their for-profit counterparts.

Nonprofits can bypass state and federal income taxes and some can apply to avoid property taxes, too. State records show most of San Diego nonprofits we’ve rounded up here have gotten permission to avoid at least some property tax assessments.

Here’s a rundown of 10 of San Diego County’s biggest nonprofit employers.
