Eater San Diego critic Candace Woo dishes on what’s in season right now (spot prawns, anyone?) and what she’s watching as the San Diego food scene keeps growing on this week’s VOSD Radio show.
Let’s talk about food. It’s a topic San Diego Eater food critic, Candice Woo, loves to chew over.
On this week’s podcast, Woo gave VOSD Radio hosts Andrew Keatts and Sara Libby a taste of her favorite San Diego eateries. She crowned TJ Oyster Bar as her No. 1 taco place and told us what local food products are freshest right now (spot prawns and uni). Most importantly — she gave us some dining recommendations.

Below are some of the takeaways from Woo’s interview.
Oysters and beer are booming in San Diego.
“You know, I do think that we’re seeing more oyster bars or sort-of raw bars. I think we’re going to continue to see new ones pop up … There’s a restaurant in Mission Hills called Brooklyn Girl and a few months ago they added this oyster bar annex to the restaurant. So I think that’s definitely the trend, you know beer and oysters – it’s a pretty great match-up.”
Speaking of beer … There are new breweries popping up too.
“I know there’s a new sort of tasting room and bottle shop opening in Solana Beach probably in the next couple of weeks. There’s a Bagby Beer Company coming to Oceanside, so I think there’s going to be a lot of cool stuff to go to. I just recently, for the first time, tried this really fun, kind of ‘sushi-ish’ place called Wrench and Rodent up in Oceanside that is building a Nano-brewer in its backyard.”
Little Italy and other “pockets” are exploding with new restaurants.
“I’m super excited about seeing pockets being filled in, like the El Cajon Boulevard corridor around 30th Street, Heart and Trotter just announce their butcher shop will be there. There’s going to be a new craft spirit store opening across the street, super excited about those two projects. I think Little Italy is doing gangbusters right now, as far as new exciting restaurants and bar projects. There’s a secret one that I can’t talk about yet, but if it happens it will make my food dreams come true.”
