A Refugee Hub in City Heights: San Diego Explained

We teamed up with our partners at NBC7 San Diego to explain why
City Heights has become such a hub for refugee resettlement.

 

In this week’s San Diego Explained, we teamed up with our partners at NBC7 San Diego to explain why violent conflicts around the globe have so defined the fabric of one San Diego community: City Heights.

In the last four decades, San Diego has become a hub for the resettlement of refugees fleeing wars and conflict around the world, from Vietnam to Somalia to Iraq. Many have settled in City Heights. Last year, according to local resettlement workers, about 5,000 arrived in San Diego, leading some local refugee advocates to call San Diego the refugee capital of the United States.
