Friday Five: Stadium Plan, Gloria Bill vs. Vaccine Critics and More

The five San Diego news stories you need to know about the week of March 8

Here are Scott Lewis’ five things you need to know about for the week of March 4-8:

  1. Mayor Kevin Faulconer hired a consultant firm to help negotiate the sale of the Mission Valley stadium land despite disapproval from the San Diego City Council.
  2. Democrats are engaged in a bitter dispute over whether a dozen clubs in the South Bay, made up of young Latino students on paper, are actually fake.
  3. Nearly two years after parents of a 17-year-old student complained to Westview High School officials that a physical education teacher was sending inappropriate text messages to their daughter, the school is still dealing with the fallout from the case.
  4. A bill written by Assemblyman Todd Gloria and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez aimed at preventing a replay of San Diego’s sluggish response to a deadly hepatitis A outbreak doesn’t mention vaccines at all. But it’s facing unexpected backlash from vaccine opponents who believe the bill could compel vaccinations.
  5. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce took its annual delegation to Sacramento this week, and apparently had an interesting breakfast with Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez.
