Our daily roundup of San Diego’s most important stories (Monday-Friday)
The fund will help provide the support our investigative team needs to do the sort of meaningful work that spurs change and reveals uncomfortable facts.
Voice of San Diego was co-founded by legendary U-T columnist Neil Morgan. Morgan, along with venture capitalist Buzz Woolley, believed San Diego needed more options for news and more local journalists doing in-depth investigative reporting.
For nearly nine years now, Voice of San Diego has been working tirelessly to do the deep investigations and daily analysis Morgan loves so much. Nothing pleases us more than receiving a nice call or email from his wife, Judith, saying we made them both proud. They’re enjoying retirement in La Jolla.
Morgan continues to inspire our organization on a daily basis. Not just in our reporting but also our vision for shepherding a new nonprofit news model that has sparked start-ups across the country. He and Woolley believed that a news organization funded by individual donors would produce the healthiest model for strong independent journalism.
In that vein, we are establishing specific funds to support our various reporting efforts — the first being the Neil Morgan Fund for Investigative Reporting. Our goal is to raise $100,000 by the end of the year to fuel our investigations through 2014.
This fund will help provide the support our investigative team needs to do the sort of meaningful work that spurs change and reveals uncomfortable facts. In addition to paying quality reporters, we need resources to pursue public records, to someday work with forensic accountants to crunch large amounts of data and to secure the legal backup needed to ensure bulletproof work.
Anyone can contribute to the Neil Morgan Fund for Investigative Reporting, whether you’re an individual, company or a foundation.
Your support will enable us to carry on an important journalistic legacy while at the same time helping to establish a new one for those who follow in our footsteps.
